In construction, there are several types of glass that are used for different purposes. Safety glass and toughened glass are two common types of glass found in many buildings.
Laminated safety glass consists of at least two flat glass panes bonded together with an elastic, tear-resistant high-polymer film, usually polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If the glass panes break, the fragments adhere to the film, thus reducing the risk of cuts or punctures. The composite effect also allows the glass panes to retain their residual load-bearing capacity.
Tempered glass
Tempered glass is float glass that is heated to over 600°C and then abruptly cooled. This process makes the glass highly resistant to impact, shock, bending and thermal stress.
The tempered glass shatters into small, cube-shaped fragments when it breaks. This reduces the risk of major cuts.
